DV LEAP in the Media

Our Founder and Acting Executive Director, Joan Meier, was recently seen on an episode of ABC's 20/20 , which originally aired in April of 2016. On this episode titled Footprints in the Snow, Joan commented on the patterns we have seen of family courts failing to believe abuse reports and forcing children to live with parents they fear. You can click on the image above to see the episode. Joan appears starting at 20:39!

VICTORY!

DV LEAP is proud to announce a recent victory in another custody appeal case, this time in Texas.  In Re JRW addresses the constitutionality of a court’s order granting custody and visitation to a paternal grandparent over the mother’s objection. DV LEAP’s client, JRW’s mother, objected to grandmother’s involvement based on past incidents where she allowed her son, JRW’s mentally-ill and substance abusing father, harmful access to JRW despite a court order preventing him from any contact.  DV LEAP's Managing Attorney, Sasha Drobnick, and a phenomenal legal team from Jones Day co-counseled the appeal challenging the order as violating the mother’s fundamental parental rights under Supreme Court rulings and Texas statutes. The Texas Court of Appeals for the 5th District reversed that decision and remanded the case back to the trial court, for compliance with the statute’s requirements.

Changes for DV LEAP

As with many things in life, there are certain things that remain consistent and others that change over time. Here at DV LEAP, our constant is our undeniable commitment to standing up for domestic violence survivors and their children who have been wronged by the trial court. We are committed to our organizational growth and are excited by the increase in our program numbers over the past three years! We look forward to future growth in our capacity to serve those in need, train court professionals across the country and make an impact both locally and nationally.

What is changing for us right now is our leadership. After three years as Executive Director for DV LEAP, Dawn Dalton is moving to the Policy Director position with the DC Coalition Against Domestic Violence, an organization with which DV LEAP often partners. We look forward to continued work with Dawn in her new role and wish her well.

In the interim, our Founder and Legal Director, Joan Meier who served as DV LEAP's Executive Director for the organization's first 10 years, will be functioning in an Acting Executive Director role until a new ED is hired. We expect to be posting the job description soon and hope that you will send anyone our way that might be a good fit.

As always, we are truly grateful to you, our partners and supporters, as we continue our work of helping survivors of domestic violence.

DV LEAP PSA "No Helmet"

DV LEAP’s friend, Illustrator/Director Pascal Nocquet, created the above PSA for DV LEAP, donating his creative services to bring awareness to the cause of ending domestic violence. We are grateful for his devotion and ask you, in the same spirit of commitment to raising awareness, to share the “No Helmet” video with your friends.
