Despite numerous legislative and policy reforms designed to protect victims of domestic violence, many courts fail domestic violence survivors and children who seek protection in court. Appellate review has been very successful in correcting trial court errors that put families in danger.

However, victims of domestic violence are rarely able to access the appellate courts since appeals are very expensive and few lawyers possess the combination of an understanding of domestic violence and the necessary appellate expertise. 

The Domestic Violence Legal Empowerment and Appels Project (DV LEAP) was founded in 2003 to fill this void in advocacy for victims of abuse. DV LEAP provides appeals at no cost to domestic violence survivors by partnering with the top law firms in the country to vet, place and file appeals or amicus briefs in appellate court cases.
